Celebrate African-American History MonthFebruary is the month this nation celebrates and acknowledges the contributions of African-Americans to the development and advancement of this country. We often refer to “race” to describe distinctions among groups of people. However, contemporary scholars agree that “race” is a recent invention. When race is used in the Bible, it most often refers to the human race.
In fact, there is widespread agreement among scholars that race, as understood in the United States, is a social construct rather than an objective, scientifically or biologically consistent characteristic of a person or group of persons. Evidence from the Human Genome Project indicates that the genetic code for all human beings is 99.9% identical; there are more differences within groups (all “races”) than across groups. There is only one race, the human race.
As we celebrate African-American History month, I pray that as a nation we will move toward the biblical principle that . . . “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus”.
Galatians 3:28
