Position Description for an Interim Pastor
Union Church is a 107 year-old Christian church in the heart of Little Tokyo in Downtown Los Angeles. The church was formed in 1918 when three Japanese speaking congregations joined together, united by a desire to follow Christ. We continue to reflect Christ’s love and serve the ever-changing neighborhood downtown. We are a legacy Japanese church with a multi-cultural congregation that reflects the community in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. At our Sunday worship we have a Japanese language service (Nichigo) at 9:00 am and an English language service at 11:00 am. Union church was formed jointly by the United Church of Christ and the Presbyterian Church USA. We follow the polity and organizational structure of the PCUSA, specifically the Presbytery of the Pacific.
Time commitment: 3/4 time
Focus of this ministry:
* Preach twice a month at the English language service.
* With the Japanese speaking pastor, facilitate and participate in the instruction of Membership Classes.
* Provide oversight to the Bible Study Program.
* Work with leaders to review the church’s Mission Statement.
* Serve as Head of Staff to provide validation, encouragement and accountability. Meet regularly with staff and volunteers.
* Community involvement – participate in community activities to represent Union Church of LA and foster and strengthen relationships with other community organizations.
* Encourage and support training and mentoring of emerging and established leaders at Union Church.
* Design and plan worship services in partnership with the worship committee.
* Develop a collegial relationship with the Nichigo pastor and maintain a spirit of collaboration and encouragement.
* Moderate the monthly meetings of the Session (church council) and meetings of the congregation. Work with the Clerk of Session to develop the agenda for the meetings.
* Adhere to the Polity of the Presbyterian Church USA.
Qualifications:
* Should have seminary training
* Preach and teach Reformed Theology
* Christian Leadership experience
Salary range: Based on qualifications and experience the compensation package range is $51,000 to $85,000 annually.

Benefits: Benefits, such as sick time, leave, etc. will be per the requirements of the State of California. Other benefits are negotiable. If the candidate is an ordained minister in either the United Church of Christ or Presbyterian Church USA, the benefits shall be subject to what is required by the denomination for an ordained call.
Position Duration, Review and Approval
* This is an Interim Pastor position which means the church shall be actively seeking an installed pastor. Unless terminated prior, this position will end when the Church calls an installed pastor.
* An bi-annual review of this position shall be conducted by the Personnel Committee.
* This employment relationship is ‘at-will,’ which means that either the employee (interim pastor) or the employer (Union Church) may terminate the employment at any time, with or without cause or prior notice. No other representative of Union Church has the authority to enter into any agreement contrary to this ‘at-will’ relationship unless it is in writing and signed by authorized parties.
* The candidate accepting this position is subject to the approval of the Commission on Ministry of the Presbytery of the Pacific.
