2024 Advent Calendar

Welcome to the Pacific Presbytery’s 2024 Advent Calendar

The Mission Interpretation and Promotion Committee invites you to join us in prayer this Advent season. We have created this calendar with a motive for prayer each day in Advent. Our hope is that it can be a way that we unite ourselves in prayer as we prepare for the coming of the Christ Child. Each week highlights a scripture passage and each day lifts up a particular ministry in Pacific Presbytery or an invitation to prayer.

We pray that it will nourish your Advent observance.

Theme: Hope

Scripture: Luke 1:46b-55 – Mary’s Song

My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowly state of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is his name; indeed, his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty. He has come to the aid of his child Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever.

Link to Homeless Count report from last year

The 2024 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count results showed a decline in unsheltered homelessness. Los Angeles County’s Point-in-Time unsheltered estimate declined by 5% to 55,365, while the City of Los Angeles’ unsheltered estimate declined by 10% to 29,275. This year’s data suggested that unprecedented coordination among LAHSA and all levels of government on the homelessness crisis is reducing unsheltered homelessness.

Scripture: Philippians 4:4-7

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Pray to end gun violence

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has a long history of supporting gun control legislation. Beginning in the late 1960s, in response to the assassinations of public leaders, the General Assembly called for “… control [of] the sale and possession of firearms of all kinds.” In 1988, these and other statements supporting gun control were again reaffirmed.

A fuller statement was approved in 1990. In it, the General Assembly went on record as:
“Support[ing] gun control at federal, state, and local levels as the most effective response to the present crisis of gun violence …”

Theme: Love

Scripture: Philippians 2:1-8

If, then, there is any comfort in Christ, any consolation from love, any partnership in the Spirit, any tender affection and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or empty conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, assuming human likeness. And being found in appearance as a human, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross.

We seek to be rooted in our biblical belief and identity as followers of Jesus and clear about our call to shift from being consumers to caretakers of the earth.

We are dedicated to the intersection of environmental justice and anti-racism. We are grounded in the faith that everything and everyone in God’s creation is interconnected.

Theme: Joy

Scripture: Philippians 1:3-11

I thank my God for every remembrance of you, always in every one of my prayers for all of you, praying with joy for your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because I hold you in my heart, for all of you are my partners in God’s grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the tender affection of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what really matters, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.

DATE & TASK:
12/26
Every day, Jesus is born

Prayerfully consider your home, neighborhood, church, county, country, and world. Invite God to illuminate the places where the love of God is incarnate. Where are the places you notice the love of God being born? What can you do to nourish and support the ministries in your world?

We are grateful to have journeyed in prayer with you through the season of Advent. Our prayer for you is that the fellowship nourished your Spirit and kindled the Hope, Peace, Love, and Joy of Christ Jesus in you.
