Rancho Palos Verdes (September 23, 2024): St. Peter’s by the Sea Presbyterian Church, Rancho Palos Verdes CA, will host a Cross Culture® forum on October 15 at 7:00 p.m. The speaker is Amanda Tyler, constitutional law expert, author and executive director of the BJC, leading that organization as it defends religious liberty and protects against government establishment of religion. Her topic is “Defending Religious Liberty and Resisting Christian Nationalism.” This Cross Culture event is free with tickets available online bit.ly/SP-CC2.
Tyler is a vocal and engaged advocate and expert on Christian nationalism. Approaching Christian nationalism from the perspective of religious freedom, she addresses questions like “Wasn’t America founded as a Christian nation?” “What’s the harm in having prayer in city council meetings or public school assemblies?” and “Is there a relationship between Christian nationalism and white supremacy?” She traces the history of Christian nationalism in America and offers concrete suggestions about ways to counter its deleterious effects.
Her talk will be followed by Q & A. Participants will come away with a deeper understanding of the protections for religious liberty in our nation’s founding documents, how to distinguish Christian nationalism from the teachings of Jesus and how patriotism and nationalism differ. She will offer positive ways individuals and faith communities can help move our national dialog forward on these issues. Light refreshments served afterwards.
Amanda Tyler is executive director of BJC (Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty). A graduate of Georgetown University and the University of Texas School of Law, Tyler’s constitutional law analysis and advocacy for faith freedom for all have been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, CBS News, ABC News, CNN, and MSNBC, and she has testified before Congress on religious liberty and Christian nationalism. Her book How to End Christian Nationalism (October 2024) is forthcoming from Broadleaf Books.
